Who will be the next Conservative leader?
The race to succeed Rishi Sunak as Conservative Party leader is down to four remaining candidates: Robert Jenrick, Kemi Badenoch, James Cleverly, and Tom Tugendhat. Jenrick currently leads among MPs, while Badenoch enjoys strong grassroots support. Jenrick has shifted towards the right with a tough stance on immigration, including plans to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, while Badenoch continues to court controversy with her firm positions on gender and cultural issues. Cleverly, a former home and foreign secretary, focuses on uniting the party while maintaining a center-right stance. Tugendhat, known for his moderate but tough approach on security, is positioned as a unifier but trails behind in support.
The final two candidates will be selected by MPs in mid-October, and party members will vote for the next leader, with the winner expected to be announced on November 2, 2024
