Tim Martin, the chairman of JD Wetherspoon, recently criticized a proposal by Cambridge University academics that suggests serving beer in two-third pint glasses, commonly known as schooners, to curb alcohol consumption. Martin described the idea as “slightly daft,” arguing that changing glass sizes would likely have little impact on drinking habits in pubs and might even encourage more people to drink at home(

He also expressed concern about rumors that the government might reduce pub operating hours to further limit alcohol consumption, which Labour ministers have since denied. Martin highlighted that these measures might not pass a “common-sense test” and emphasized that practical approaches are needed rather than additional regulations that could further challenge the hospitality sector

This criticism from Martin comes as Wetherspoon reports a recovery in profits, with pre-tax earnings rising by 73.5% to £73.9 million for the last fiscal year. The chain attributed this to increased demand, despite reducing its number of pubs
