UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing to travel to Washington alongside a coalition of European leaders to back Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a high-stakes Oval Office meeting with Donald Trump.

The visit, set for later this week, comes amid renewed concerns over U.S. commitment to Ukraine as Russia intensifies its offensive in the Donbas region. Trump, who has repeatedly questioned the scale of U.S. military aid to Kyiv, is expected to press Zelensky for concessions that critics fear could weaken Ukraine’s negotiating position with Moscow.

Starmer, joined by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, intends to demonstrate a united Western front. According to officials, the delegation will stress that European security depends on continued American support for Ukraine and that any retreat would embolden the Kremlin.

“This is about sending a clear signal—Europe stands firmly with Ukraine, and we urge our American partners not to waver,” a senior British government source said.

The Oval Office meeting is being billed as a diplomatic “showdown,” with Zelensky expected to appeal directly to Trump for sustained military and financial backing. Analysts say the presence of key European leaders underscores the stakes, reflecting fears that Trump could push for a peace deal on terms favorable to Moscow.

Trump allies, however, argue that the former president is merely seeking to “end the war responsibly” and ensure that U.S. taxpayers are not burdened indefinitely.

For Starmer, the trip will mark his most visible engagement on the global stage since taking office, testing his ability to influence U.S. foreign policy at a critical moment for Ukraine and Europe alike.
