‘They are not monsters’: Kim Kardashian calls for Menendez brothers to be released
Kim Kardashian has publicly called for the release of the Menendez brothers, who were convicted in 1996 for the murder of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez. The brothers, Lyle and Erik, were 21 and 18 at the time of the killings. They claimed that years of abuse, both physical and sexual, drove them to commit the crime, although this testimony was largely excluded from their second trial.
In her op-ed for NBC News, Kardashian emphasized the need for a reconsideration of their sentences, pointing out that the brothers' case became sensationalized in the media, turning them into “monsters” in the public eye. She highlighted how their abuse claims were ignored in their second trial, leaving them without a fair chance to defend themselves. Despite the gravity of their crime, Kardashian argued that time changes individuals, and the brothers, now in their 50s, are not the same people they were at the time of the murders. She believes they should be given a chance for a new trial or resentencing.
This push from Kardashian comes in light of renewed public interest in their case, following the release of the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office has also announced a review of the case, which could potentially lead to a new trial or a reduced sentence.
